Reasons for Consultation:
He needed treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). After extensive gastro-enterological examinations by specialists neither his GP nor the specialists offered him any treatment because they could not find a diagnosis for his problem – severe diarrhoea for about 6 months. He had initially been given Imodium to stop the diarrhoea but this had not been effective.

Problems revealed during consultation:
Blood sugar imbalances;
Mineral deficiencies and imbalances especially potassium, magnesium and zinc;
Mild depression, anxiety, withdrawal, lack of motivation, low energy.
Repeated colds that took a long time to clear.
Chronic fungal infection of the toes for many years.
Repeated infection with threadworm in the past, never fully treated.
Several years continued use of anti-malarial tablets.
He was underweight and dehydrated.

Present and Past Diet:
His past diet had been poor with of meat, processed foods, wheat products and sugary foods and not enough water drunk. His diet at the time of consultation, had improved but he was still consuming too much of wheat products, diary products and sugary foods and still not drinking enough water.

Interpretation and conclusions from the First Consultation:
Although this client was on a good diet he clearly exhibited severe nutrient deficiencies especially of potassium, which is easily lost during diarrhoea. Many other nutrients were also deficient as food was passing through without proper digestion.
The excessive weight loss was due to dehydration, mineral imbalances and compromised digestion. He also appeared to have a leaky gut, allowing partially digested foods to enter the blood circulation. This was consistent with yeast infections and sensitivity to several foods.
He appeared to have a high load of toxins because his liver was compromised so was not detoxifying effectively. Over-consumption of wheat and dairy products and long term drug use put an extra burden of detoxification on the liver.

Progress:
Removal of the offending foods and restriction of others brought the diarrhoea to an end within a week. This was a great relief as he had lost hope of getting better. Continued treatment with nutritional supplements, to heal the fragile digestive system and reduce the burden on the liver, brought further improvement and he was feeling much better, with most symptoms having disappeared. Blood sugar imbalances improved only slowly as the client had a sweet tooth. He also fought tooth and nail not to give up cheese claiming that there was no connection, however, reduction in the amount consumed brought further improvement. After about six months IBS was a thing of the past. He had improved so much that he could occasionally have the offending foods without serious reaction.
