Bronchial Asthma

Introduction

Asthma is an allergic disorder which causes spasms of the bronchi (air ways to the lungs), and swelling of the mucous lining of the lungs. The rate of asthma in industrialised countries is growing rapidly especially among children. Asthma attacks can lead to a respiratory failure.

NB. If you suffer from acute attacks of asthma, please contact you doctor.

The Symptoms of Asthma

  • Excessive production of a thick, viscous mucous
  • Airway obstruction
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing and abnormal breath sounds

Who is at Risk?

  • Those genetically predisposed to allergies
  • Children
  • The elderly

The Causes

The following factors are believed to contribute to the development of Asthma and Hay fever:

  • Increased stress on the immune function due to air pollution
  • Introduction of breast milk substitutes at birth
  • Early weaning and early introduction of solid foods to infants, which stresses the immune system
  • Repeated use of antibiotics and steroids
  • Food additives and consumption of allergic foods
  • Sensitivity to grass and other pollens
  • Mould sensitivity
  • Whooping cough vaccine is also a suspect
  • Suppressed adrenal function and so low levels of cortisol and adrenaline
  • Hypoglycaemia and adrenal exhaustion
  • Oxidative free radical damage
  • Emotional stress (e.g. fear, anger, anxiety, insecurity)
  • Leaky gut syndrome
  • Intestinal yeast overgrowth ( Candida infection)
  • Reduced gastric secretion
  • Strenuous exercise

The major triggers of asthmatic attacks are:-
Grass pollen, house dust-mites, moulds, yeast, viruses, cigarette smoke, strenuous exercise in cold air, self exertion, strong odours, eggs, shell fish, peanuts and other nuts, milk and milk products, chocolate, wheat, artificial food colour.

Those who have any of the above symptoms or asthma might like to consder **Nutritional consultation, Food allergy tests and a visit to the doctor.

Hay Fever

Hay fever is quite similar to asthma. Although the symptoms are uncomfortable it is not life threatening.

The Symptoms

  • Watery nasal discharge
  • Excessive sneezing
  • Itching nose and eyes
  • Low energy

The commonest triggers are grass and tree pollens as well as the causes listed under asthma. So allergy and sensitivity to food and other substances play an important role in causing hay fever. The nutritional treatment for hay fever is quite similar to that of asthma, starting with the identification of the offending substances. Then focussing on treating the underlying cause .
Those who have hay fever or any of the symptoms listed above might like to consider **Nutritional consultation, Food allergy tests and Candida infection test.
